Master Liver/Gallbladder Flush

So today marks my 9th Liver/Gallbladder Flush. It is around 2 pm and all I have been sustaining on is apple juice with a greens powder it in. Yep, no food today, just fresh pressed apple juice and my cleansing drink tonight. Surprisingly I feel great on liver and gallbladder cleanses.

Wait! Before you go any further, I would definitely suggest that you check out the post “Livin’ with a Liver” to find out exactly what the liver does, and why this whole flush is so very important. After you read it, then come back. Okay?

For all of you who have never heard of a liver/gallbladder flush, this is THE cleanse. Meaning that this flush is the real deal, full- body changing cleanse. The Liver Gallbladder flush is based on the idea that toxins build up in the liver and gallbladder (sometimes causing identifiable gallstones) and cause congestion. This congestion leads to a multitude of symptoms and diseases because of the great role the liver plays in the functioning of the human body.

In a nutshell you essentially drink fresh apple juice for 6 days (apple juice has malic acid which softens stones), and on the 6th day you fast on just apple juice and drink epson salts and olive oil with grapefruit at night. Over the night, the stones will be purged from the gallbladder and in the morning you will see a multitude of little gallstones come out (yes, in the toilet bowl). You are usually good to go by noon that next day. So essentially you just need to plan to stay home one night and one morning. That’s it!

I have stuck with this cleanse because it is one of the few cleanses where I have actually seen results. It is not the most pleasant cleanse in the world, but its certainly not that difficult either. Depending on your health status you might have to spend up to three months preparing for it using some liver and gallbladder nutrients, but if you have already been on a program or engaging in a healthy lifestyle, you might only need a month to prepare.

Why Cleanse the Liver and Gallbladder?

The liver is one of the most important organs in the body controlling over 400 functions. These functions range from full-body detoxification, synthesis of proteins, hormone control and production, as well as well nutrient and energy synthesis. Unfortunately our lifestyles cause the development of stones in the liver and gallbladder that are very detrimental to our health. Cleansing the liver and gallbladder from all accumulated stones helps to restore homeostasis, balances weight, and sets the precondition for the body to heal itself.

The liver has direct control over the growth and functioning of every cell in the body. Any kind of malfunction, deficiency or abnormal growth pattern of the cell is largely due to poor liver performance. Even when it has lost up to 60% of its original efficiency, the liver’s extraordinary design and resourcefulness may allow it to perform “properly,” as indicated by normal blood values. That is why it is important to begin liver flushing even if you do not have blood work that dictates a stressed liver. The earlier you start, the better chance you have of preventing any symptoms or disease in the future. This is your insurance policy.

What are Stones in the Liver and Gallbladder made of?

20% are mineral-based, being made of calcium salts and bile pigments. There are also non-calcified stones which are often cholesterol-based, clumps of fat, hardened bile or pigments of bilirubin. These block the bile ducts, which cause stress on the organs and the rest of the body because they not only impair the organs’ functioning but inhibit proper bile flow.

Liver and Gallstones

What is Bile?

Bile assists in the digestion of fat, calcium and protein foods. It is needed to maintain normal fat levels in the blood, remove toxins from the liver, maintain proper acid/alkaline balance in the intestinal tract, and keep the colon from breeding harmful microbes.

What Results Will I See?

By removing the stones that congest the bile duct and the gallbladder, the liver and gallbladder can restore their original efficiency, and symptoms will begin to subside. You should expect to improve digestion, energy, reduced pain, improved outer beauty, improved emotional health and a clearer mind. Here are a few benefits I have had:

  • Elimination of food allergies
  • Significant reduction in back pain
  • Increased energy
  • New hair growth
  • Rapid nail growth
  • Reduction in PMS symptoms
  • Lose of hormonal weight gain
  • Improved digestion of fatty foods

*Now I must note, that not everyone feels dramatic results after their first flush. Therefore, it is necessary to continue flushing every 4-6 weeks.

Do I Need To Do a Liver Gallbladder Flush?

I would say that everyone needs to do a flush. I started my first round of flushes at the age of 23, and at that point I thought that I had been relatively healthy. Having done already a few years of supplements and cleansing, I was not expecting many stones to come out, if any. Boy was I wrong. I had probably 30 stones come out on my first flush, and subsequently had some come out in my last 8 flushes as well. Any engagement in alcohol, processed or fatty foods can lead to gallstones not to mention, the worst of them all, Birth Control Pills. Birth control pills deplete your body of B6 which is key for liver and gallbladder function, therefore my 8 years of use made me a perfect candidate. I am not the only one either. In all my experience working with clients and practitioners, I have never heard anyone that did not get results from a flush. Therefore, I would definitely suggest for everyone to engage in a flush.

* Note: If you are very congested, you might not see stones on your first few flushes but you are in fact still reaping the benefits of the cleanse.

How do I Begin?

Because the liver gallbladder flush is a very serious cleansing process, I insist that you must do a intestinal cleanse beforehand. If the gut is not unobstructed and clear, it will not be to your advantage to do the flush. Therefore, please first begin with this basic intestinal cleanse first.

Once you have done your intestinal cleanse then you will be ready for your gallbladder and liver nutrient regime. Follow the directions here.

Can Anyone Do a Liver Gallbladder Cleanse?

Anyone can do a cleanse, even if you do not have a gallbladder or have diseases of the liver and/or gallbladder. If you are in a compromised state such as dealing with chronic disease, autoimmune disease, cancer or are facing having your gallbladder removed, you are eligible to do the flush. But you MUST prepare months in advance. If you do not, then you will face having a very unpleasurable (this is me being nice) experience.

Once again, this is an advanced cleanse and should follow a kidney cleanse and an intestinal cleanse, but is beneficial for everyone in all states of health.

What is Next?

The cleanse of course! Depending on your health journey, you may need to start with the kidney cleanse and the intestinal cleanse prior to performing the liver/gallbladder flush. It is highly suggested that you do the cleanses in the following order to ensure a safe and effective liver and gallbladder flush.

Directions to a Kidney Cleanse

Directions to a Intestinal Cleanse

Directions to the Liver/Gallbladder Flush

If you would like to learn more about liver and gallbladder flushing, then I would suggest that you read the book “The Liver and Gallbladder Miracle Cleanse” by Andreas Moritz. This will provide you with further detailed information about liver and gallbladder health and cleansing.

Note: This flush is based off of Andreas Mortiz Liver Gallbladder Flush.

While there is much controversy around this type of cleanse, I personally have done over 20 and it has changed my life. It is the process of using herbs and nutrients to stimulate the breakdown of gallstones, which are then flushed from the body by drinking 4 oz of olive oil after a fast. This is a cleanse to be worked up to, but I have seen it revolutionize people’s healing process, and it should be a part of everyone’s practice (everyone has gallstones, even if you are young). It was referring to the salt flush. You can do that before the kidney cleanse or during. I am working on a more advanced intestinal cleanse. Stay tuned!

A wonderful safe way to cleanse is activia and prune juice shake. 2 containers of activia and 16 ounce prune juice. It’s pleasant tasting and will work miracles. I’m celiac and it helps get me through accidental gluten contamination.

Reply lauren May 28, 2013 at 1:46 pm

Oh nice recommendation! I would recommend that you look for a raw organic yogurt instead of activa in order to avoid hormones and antibiotics in the dairy, and to increase the probiotic content (regular yogurt is pasteurized, which kills a lot of the healthy naturally occurring probiotics). I think you would get much better results.

I had an operation on my urinary bladder – they cut it open and removed 54 stones,

It’s been 100 days and all I can do is dribble (no steady flow) – they say I need to wait my time for healing – 2 weeks ago, I stopped up completely for 12 hours –

Do I, or can I, need some kind of flush?

HI Richard, I never can recommend that anyone do a flush or cleanse without the guidance of their practitioner. I would consider working with a holistic practitioner in your area instead to guide you through the proper treatment. A few things that are key to healing the urinary bladder are bioflavonoids and vitamin C. I would also consider cranberry juice to make sure no infection takes host. A couple of my favorite products for bioflavonoids and vitamin C are Ultra Pollen and Vitamin C by Premier Research Labs. I would look into those and consult with your doctor.

Thanks for this info on the liver cleanse. My friend and I want to do the cleanse, but you mention that we should work up to the cleanse—-we aren’t sure exactly what that entails. If we were to do this cleanse without preparation, would that be a problem?

    • lauren
Reply lauren August 23, 2013 at 1:52 pm

Yes, I would always do the preparation. The liver cleanse is NOT a simple cleanse, it moves a lot of toxins in the body and can be harsh on the body if not prepared properly.

What if one has been doing a juice fast for 3 weeks and coffee enemas for two weeks? I’ve been doing a one coffee enema Monday – Friday and two on Saturday and Sunday.

That sounds like a great start, but unless you have taken the specific nutrients, I would be wary to do the flush. I have done them without prep and you dont want to go there… This is a very effective, yet serious flush, and so preparation is not to be missed. You do not want to harm the body at all.

          Hey, Joe,
Sounds like you’re doing a partial Gerson liver cleanse already. Have you seen “the Gerson Miracle” on youtube? I wonder what the difference is for the liver between these 2 liver cleanses.

  • Reply Mary September 16, 2013 at 2:16 am

Hi Lauren, I have been reading about liver cleanses. I have a question. I read where Mr Stokes a DC mentioned that gallbladder stones that people claim and or find after a gallbladder cleanse are soap pieces. The products ingested during the cleanse cause these soap rocks to form. Have you heard that?
I wanted to do a cleanse but it is confusing as to what is that right thing to do.

    • lauren
Reply lauren September 21, 2013 at 5:38 pm

I have absolutely heard that and as a person who has done 15 flushes and have guided countless people through them… they are not soap rocks. The changes are dramatic after you do the flushes, and if they were just soap rocks then there would not be results like that. Furthermore, you can feel the body change with the flush. It is fabulous!

Hi Lauren, I wonder what do you mean with “New hair Growth”? The thing is in the last and a half year my hair is thinning all over my head (lost like 50% density). Blood test are ok. Thinning everywhere but in the back it is a little bit better. An homeopath/iriologist told me it was the liver, after a change in the diet no more acne (well, now just a little), less oily hair (but still oily) but the real problem, the thinning hair is still the same. Maybe, only maybe, it is thinning at a slower rate (been like 9 months since the diet). Thanks in advance! Please let me know, I am desperate, I want my hair to be able to have a beautiful girl like you!

New hair growth means tiny little hairs that are sprouting, typically on the hair line. Yes, liver, as well as kidney, are directly related to hair growth. If you have ruled out hormones, then this is the way to go. I hope that helps!

Thanks for this information. I’m a 30 yr old female who has had IBS / indigestion for 10 yrs. I’m hoping liver flushes will help me digest my food better. Did u find this? Also I was wondering if a person like me has a small frame, should they take a smaller dosage of Epsom salts / olive oil ? I’m planning to do my first flush next week and have completed intestinal cleansing. Thank you!

Hi tina, no unfortunately you have to take the full dose of epsom salts and olive oil. It should help with digestion, especially if you have already done the intestinal cleansing. The key is to keep doing the flushes until no stones come out two flushes in a row.

  • Reply Ramona Brooks June 11, 2014 at 7:07 am

For some reason I was not able to open the intestinal cleanse. I was able to open the Kidney Cleanse and the Liver/Gallbladder Cleanse, but, not the intestinal cleanse.

If it is not too much bother could you send that to my email address?

    Thank you.

Also, I am taking a herb called “Chanca Piedra” to help get rid of gallstones. Have you heard anything about this?

Hi Ramona, try this LINK. Let me know if that works. If not, email me at As for Chanca Piedra, yes I have heard of it and it can be very effective in breaking down gallstones. With that being said, it can be extremely rough on the system and so I never recommend using it unless you are working with a practitioner. You do not want to cause more harm to the body… A much gentler option is Gallbladder ND. I have used this extensively and have found it to be the safest and most effective option… actually more effective for gallstones than CP.

  • Reply Natasha April 27, 2015 at 7:13 am

I am very interested in doing a cleanse. I just got back from the hospital because I had what they said to be a very severe gallbladder attack. I got to the point where I was having a real hard time breathing. It was very scary! My only concern is I am 4 1/2 months pregnant on top of everything. Is it ok to do this cleanse while I’m pregnant? I have been having a lot of gallbladder pain since the pregnancy and it is just getting worse do to the pregnancy. I need relief bad. They just suggested Pepcid or another drug like it to help me, but I do not want to have to take any medication if possible. I would rather solve the issue naturally if possible. Do you have any suggestions?

    • Lauren aka The Holy Kale
Reply Lauren aka The Holy Kale April 30, 2015 at 3:12 pm

Hi Natasha, unfortunately it is not advised to do a cleanse while pregnant, but there are a couple things you can do to relieve the pain and lessen the stress on the gallbladder. First and foremost diet. Avoiding foods that aggravate the GB is key. This includes fatty foods like fried foods, shortening, lard, and using fats like mayo, butter, avocado and oils sparingly. If you are drinking coffee or black tea, I would replace with an herbal variety. Dark chocolate can also be aggravating. Avoid high fat meats such as bacon, salt pork, beef short ribs, luncheon meat, sausages and chicken liver, and greatly reduce all full fat dairy like cream, half n half, full milk, ice cream, cream cheese and sour cream. I would also start using Castor Oil packs over the gallbladder area at night to reduce the pain. HERE is good info about how to do that. I would also buy GLF essential oil by young living and rub it on the gallbladder area daily, especially when in pain. Finally, you may consider using Urban Moonshine’s Digestive Bitters. Bitters stimulate bile flow which helps to digest fatty foods and lessen the stress on the gallbladder. You simply spray them in your mouth before and after eating. You can discuss with your doctor to make sure it is okay for you to take. Good Luck!

  • Reply Rosalyn May 6, 2015 at 1:56 am

Would it be safe to cleanse while nursing?
I’ve had cholestasis with both my pregnancies and wondering if this would help clean things up and maybe prevent this the next time around?!

    • Lauren aka The Holy Kale
Reply Lauren aka The Holy Kale May 6, 2015 at 9:19 pm

Hi Rosalyn, unfortunately I would not suggest it. You will not want to push anything out of the body that may be harmful to the baby including chemicals, heavy metals etc. Once you finish nursing, then start before you plan on getting pregnant again.

The Andreas Moritz Liver/Gallbladder flush really does work! I just found your site, but have done more than 10 flushes before. I have found that using certain Chinese herbs like Gold Coin Grass and Chinese Bitters give even better results. Go to and check out the info. Their statement about taking the herbs one hour before the actual flush is particularly interesting and it helps. They are in Toronto, Canada. You can buy the herbs there too. One thing I didn’t agree with them on is they seem to think the stones only come from the gallbladder. I emailed them to mention liver stones, but didn’t get a satisfactory reply. Also the best apple juice to use is cold pressed organic Suja Elements. You can special order from Whole Foods if they don’t usually carry it.

Reply Lauren aka The Holy Kale August 3, 2015 at 5:10 pm

Gold Coin Grass is an excellent herb for gallbladder dilation thus promoting the release of the stones and completely agree about Chinese Bitters. I use them for improving digestion when the gallbladder function is impaired, or the gallbladder has been removed. I agree that there is also liver stones.. you can find online pictures and descriptions of the differences between the two. I haven’t tried that brand of juice but LOVE making my own fresh… Pink Lady Apples are my favorite! Sweet but Tart.

  • Reply Rich July 29, 2015 at 7:38 am

Having a cleaner colon is also one of the keys to a successful flush. I like to use bentonite clay with a little food grade diatomaceous earth(to get rid of mucoid plaque and parasites). I like to drink some (Dragon Herbs ee)schizandra tea the morning after the flush after the effects of the epsom salts has ended and before eating. That seems like the best time to draw out additional liver toxins. I take some Healthforce Nutritionals zeolite capsules throughout the day too and make sure to take the bentonite/diatom. earth mixture that night and a few times in the following 24 hours just to try to absorb any lingering toxins/ residue released during the flush.

    • Lauren aka The Holy Kale
Reply Lauren aka The Holy Kale August 3, 2015 at 5:12 pm

Great add ons although I am always wary of using Zeolite since it is such a powerful detoxifying agent that leaves the body via the kidneys. In certain cases it can be quite stressful and even damaging to the kidneys depending on what you are clearing and what the state of health the kidneys are in. But I completely agree which is why I always recommend/urge for people to do my easy intestinal cleanse prior to the liver/gallbladder flush.

I’m sure someone somewhere in the comment threads has already asked this question, but for me its been a really long day and I hope you can be pacient with my questions.
You said that for six days you drank fresh pressed apple juice, can that be any kind of apple? Is there one that works best like a red apple veres a green apple? And during those six days were you doing anything special with your diet or just being normal in your eating habits. Also how many apples for six days, enough to make 8 oz worth? Did you only have ONE glass of apple juice in the six days or more then one? And does fresh apple cider count as “fresh pressed apple juice”.
I think that ends my questioning, sorry for any spelling mistakes. Its been a long day and I just stumbled across your blog a few moments ago. Thank you so much.

Reply Lauren The Holy Kale September 22, 2015 at 5:23 pm

No problem at all 🙂 Actually most all your diet questions are in the directions so go HERE. Apple juice – choose organic unfiltered (apple type does not matter) like the brands Lakewood, R.W. Knudsen, or Trader Joes. Apple cider is not the same as apple juice. You are to drink 24 oz of apple juice daily (or malic acid). As for the diet, under the directions in Days 1-4 it refers to the diet. This will be avoiding animal-protein rich foods, dairy products, sugar, alcohol and cold drinks (they chill the liver-reducing effectiveness of cleanse). No fried foods, fast-foods or processed foods. Day 5 diet: Continue to eat your regular meals, except eliminate all flesh foods (red meat, poultry, fish etc.), and eliminate all oils and fats. For example, eliminate cheese, olive oil, oily salad dressings etc. I usually do a shake in the morning, salad with a vinegar dressing and a grain, bean and a steamed vegetable dish for dinner. Day 6 is a light breakfast (refer to directions) and then fasting the rest of the day.

Hello Rashmi, it can take up to a few months for the Gallbladder ND and the Biliven to help break down the stones. This is a natural treatment, so unlike pharmaceutical medicine it does not happen over night. I would stick with the supplements and I would also follow the diet recommendations I outlined in my post about Natural Gallbladder Treatment. As always, consult with your doctor about these changes to ensure that it is in line with your current state of health. As for doing the actual flush, I would be very careful. I would suggest using the two supplements and following the diet for at least 3 months before attempting. I would even get another scan to check on the size of the stones prior to see if they have decreased in size. Hopefully that answers your questions 🙂

In the meantime, you can follow the steps I recommend in my Natural Treatment for Gallstones post. There is a lot that you can do to help your condition without having to do the flush. Between diet, therapies like castor oil packs, and targeted nutrition, I think you have a great chance of improving your health. As always, consult with your MD beforehand. Best of luck Kristen!

Hi can you please let me know what’s best for me. I have just been diagnosed with multiple mobile gallstones with on off diarrhoea and pain since last September. I went to a health food store and they gave me fusion liver tonic to try. I’ve had every test under the sun. Also very strict diet since September. Really not sure what I should do….next step is gallbladder removal not sure if I’m ready for that…so ready to try anything.

Hi Stef, I am so sorry to hear what you are going through. Have you read through my article that specifically deals with gallstones? Read my Natural Treatments article because it outlines all the steps from diet and supplements. After you read through that, feel free to email me directly at and I can help you further.

HI Lauren u seem very knowledgable i also have done liver cleanse at least 50 times in my life along w ejuva n arise n shine for mucoid plaque and my question is this. My poor brother can get a freakin stone to squeak out, do u have any idea why? He ‘s followed all Hulda Clarks theories about parasite and did n entire kidney parasite and digestive cleanse and tried the liver flush for the third time all excited he would finally get his stones out and all that happens to him is he gets really sick at 2am w a fever the night of flush protocol and nothing comes out! Im totally stumped, could it be because of mucoid plaque he needs to remove or is it that he needs to soften them (the stones). I would greatly appreciate your advice
