Friday Favorites! Bach Flower Remedies and Healing Berries

It is the end of a new week and there is so much to share! I have been super busy trying and loving new things, so here is my very best summary of all the wonderful things I have been eating, reading, wearing and taking. I hope you enjoy all these favorite things including bach flower remedies and healing berries…

SHIITAKE MUSHROOM + LENTIL ASIAN TACOS by Sprouted Kitchen

Shiitake Mushroom and Lentil Asian Tacos by Sprouted Kitchen

I have really missed Mexican inspired food, because its seems as though I always come to a culinary roadblock when it comes to cooking Mexican without cheese and meat… so when I found this recipe I was DYING to try it. Not to mention, Shiitake mushrooms are one of my favorite things to cook with, because they are extremely high in protein and full of nutrients – I believe that they are most certainly one of the healthiest foods – but, they are not always the easiest to incorporate. This recipe was relatively simple to make and it turned out amazing. A MUST on your list. BTW: if you have not been to Sprouted Kitchen you have to go… and you MUST buy their cookbook: “The Sprouted Kitchen” – a go-to for whole food cooking (note: this is not a vegan cookbook, but can be modified to your tastes).

Schizandra Supplement by Dragon Herbs

Schizandra

I have loved Dragon Herbs for the past year and this is just another one of my favorites that I have been using for the past 2 months. While not the most well known herb in the Western world, Schizandra is widely used to beautify the skin and to protect the skin from the damaging effects of the sun and wind. Due to the astringent quality of Schizandra, the skin tends to hold its moisture and becomes full and beautiful. It has always been very popular with the wealthy men and women of China, especially the women of the imperial court, because of its youth preserving and rejuvenating effects. It is said that those who use Schizandra consistently will remain youthful in both appearance and physiology.

While I am typically pretty skeptical about overt claims regarding nutrients, I will say that this one has lived up to its name. I most certainly noticed that within 2 weeks my skin color evened out, and there was a new radiance about it. This seems to be my answer to living a beach lifestyle, always out in the sun, and I will mention that it acts like an internal skin foundation… it creates an even, flawless tone in the skin. Love it! You can find it here. I take 3 daily.

This business was just started by a dear friend of mine, Nicolle Sullivan who is a full-time Naturopathic Doctor, mother and now soap maker!  She started this company as way to take control of her children’s health, especially after her first was diagnosed with Autism. She makes all the soaps by hand out of her home and it most certainly shows! I have had the pleasure of enjoying her Chamomint, Honey/Almond/Oatmeal and Coffee blends. All natural clays, oils and even botanicals that she grows in her own very garden, you do not have to worry about harmful additives, animal products, chemicals or preservatives. Not to mention, they don’t leave that drying residue and they are perfect for anyone, even babies! You can find her beautiful soaps here.

“Best Skin Ever -Seabuckthorn Oil” Exfoliator and Facial Cleanser by Living Libations

Seabuckthorn Oil by Living Libations

I am always on the lookout for a fabulous facial cleanser, and while I have a few standby’s that I love… I feel as though I always need to have a minimum of three on hand in order to have the perfect option for my mood that day. Sometimes I need more cleansing, sometimes more moisturizing, and sometimes something gentle and sensitive. This oil is just in the middle of all three. It is in fact an oil, yet you use it as a face wash, so it cleanses and exfoliates the skin, but then leaves it super soft and glowing. It is made from all organic and/or wild crafted ingredients and nothing else. It includes: super-critical Sea buckthorn oil, golden jojoba oil, virgin coconut oil, tamanu oil, lavender, vetiver, grapefruit, and palmarosa essential oils. It has a very soft, warm and light fragrance so it is perfect for everyday use. In case you are worried about its affects on oily, acne-prone skin, it has over numerous testimonies showing that it even has helped to clear those issues up. Clean and effective. Love! Bach Flower Remedy: Elm

Bach Flower ELM

If you have been following my posts, facebook and twitter lately, you most likely have noticed that I have been going through an emotionally challenging time that has actually left me quite physically and mentally fatigued. The good news is that I am coming out of it a stronger and more enlightened person than when I got into it, and that is a lot due to my yoga and meditation practices, empowering networks I am tapped into, and last, but not least… my Bach Flower Remedy – Elm.

For those who have never heard about Bach flower remedies, they are in fact flower essences that have been determined to contain special healing attributes to the emotional body, and through those attributes are able influences the health of the physical body. I have used these quite frequently throughout my own life and with my clients, and they continue to amaze me. Like other natural treatments, they take effect by treating the whole individual, not the disease or symptom of the disease. You simply place a few drops in your water daily and watch as your emotional state radically changes. I can typically feel them just after 1 dose. So the Bach Flower that I had chosen for this particular round of emotional challenges was ELM, which states “restores your normal strength and optimism when you are temporarily overwhelmed or burdened by responsibility.” My secret weapon now shared 🙂 If you are feeling as though you are in a similar state or would like to explore the other remedies, check them out here.

I’m definitely going to try these tacos…I recently found an easy and quick recipe for tortillas (after I couldn’t find an all-natural version in stores for years) and now my only problem is that I don’t know what to eat them with since my Mexican food knowledge is very limited, so this is perfect!

Also, those Bach flower remedies sound really interesting. I’ve been feeling really tired recently too, and I need something to help bring my mood and energy level up. The Fire Starter Sessions book (I spent a little too much time on Amazon looking through it after seeing your tweet – I had to peel myself away! :P) and the Schizandra supplement are now on my wishlist too – I feel like this post is not going to be good for my wallet! 😛

    Happy weekend!

Homemade tortillas!! Do share!? I just got these brown rice ones by Food for Life… pretty tasty but making them at home is always better. Yes, start your Christmas list now!

      • Reply Ana July 14, 2012 at 2:15 pm

Yes, they’re so good and quick too! I made these flour ones (http://www.cooks.com/rec/view/0,1757,130189-249197,00.html) one morning and I also found this recipe for corn tortillas (http://www.cooking-mexican-recipes.com/corn-tortilla-recipe.html) that I want to make soon. What I learned is that if you want them to be soft you have to stack them on a plate and keep them covered while making them. Hope this helps!

Oh, and I just remembered I have a question. Do you, by any chance, know other good recipes for shiitake mushrooms? I’ve never had them before and I had no idea they are so nutritious.

Good idea on that Christmas wishlist! 🙂

I haven’t posted any recipes yet, but I typically use them as a bean substitute, or add them to salads or soups. They are also fabulous to add into asian soba noodle dishes and even pasta dishes!

I love Danielle La Porte’s ‘The Firestarter Sessions’. It’s a really terrific book, and I’ve given a frienda copy as a gift (because I was a little scared if I lent her my copy I’d never get it back!)
