Have you heard about omega-3 fatty acids? These are the essential fatty acids (healthy fats) that you hear about being in salmon and fish oil. The reason why they have become one of the most important nutrients is because they have a profound effect on the health of our body. They have the ability to not only protect against disease, but research has found that they can even treat certain conditions as well. In my practice, I always recommend increasing omega-3 fatty acid intake through the diet, and in many cases with a supplement as well. So what does this have to do with omega-3 rich strawberry hemp milk? Well, hemp seeds are 30% fat, with 80% of that fat being essential fatty acids (omega-3 and omega-6). They are the best vegetarian source of omega-3 fatty acids, making them one of my essential foods to incorporate into your diet daily (check out the other 5 foods you need to be eating daily here). Since eating hemp seeds plain is not always the easiest or tastiest, I came up with the solution of making hemp milk.

Drinking hemp milk has some other impressive health benefits too. It is not only an excellent source of the essential omega-3 fatty acids, but it also is a great source of protein. Hemp contains 25% percent protein and includes all of the essential amino acids, with especially high levels of arginine. Hemp has a similar amino acid profile to soy protein and egg white protein and is therefore considered a high-quality protein. Hemp milk is also high in chlorophyll, great for alkalinizing the body and boosting oxygen in the blood. Hemp milk also contains a high content of minerals and Vitamin E, helping to protect the body from toxins, and promoting cardiovascular health.
So why homemade hemp milk? Making hemp milk homemade is so very easy and is free of any additives. All you do is blend and strain hemp seeds with filtered water, and add in any flavorings that you like. I decided to make this specific hemp milk strawberry flavored, because it makes it taste like a delicious milkshake. Regular hemp milk definitely has a more earthy taste than say coconut or almond milk, so I find the strawberries really upgrade it. Plus, this omega-3 rich strawberry hemp milk is absolutely perfect for babies and kids. I have had a lot of mothers asking what is the best type of milk for babies and kids, and I always say hemp. It causes no known allergies, is vital for brain and nerve development, aids in a happy mood and is a source of protein too. So, to make it that much more appealing to kids, I’ve added the strawberries. Feel free to use this recipe as is, or switch up the flavor by adding a different berry such as blueberries. You can also leave out the berries and just make it plain, perfect for adding to granola, smoothies or cereal. If you are concerned about the sugar content, leave out the maple syrup, or use stevia instead.

Omega-3 Rich Strawberry Hemp Milk
- 1 cup hemp seeds
- 3 cups filtered water
- pinch of sea salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 teaspoons maple syrup
- 1 teaspoon coconut oil (optional)
- 2 cups strawberries, organic
Add hemp seeds and filtered water to a high-speed blender. Blend for 30-60 seconds, or until completely smooth.
Get a large bowl and hold nut milk bag over bowl. Slowly pour hemp milk into the nut milk bag.
Start to strain the milk through the nut milk bag, twisting and squeezing until all the liquid has passed through the bag and into the bowl.
Once the liquid has completely passed into the bowl, take the liquid and put it back in the blender.
Now add in sea salt, vanilla, maple syrup, coconut oil, and strawberries. Blend on high until smooth.
Transfer into a large mason jar or pitcher. Will last about 4 days refrigerated.
